Epic was proud to partner with Epic Educator Ambassador Brian Lopez and Logitech for an 8-week case study focused on the impact of headset technology on ELL student reading performance.
Initially, Lopez’s students used traditional wired earbuds while engaging with Epic. However, these earbuds presented challenges such as distraction due to ambient noise and discomfort caused by frequent adjustments. The goal of this study was to see if use of the Logitech Zone Learn headset would lead to a more beneficial reading experience with Epic in schools.
“Epic is our gateway to the world of information via online books. It has a plethora of books to choose from and it creates an inclusive learning environment for students that are unable to read on their own,” said Lopez. “The Read-To-Me feature allows students to visually see the words move with directionality across the page, while simultaneously hearing the words read aloud from the story. This blend of visual and auditory learning opens up stories that were hard to grasp in traditional books, making it easier for students to focus and learn new information.”
The Zone Learn headsets, specially designed for young learners, is equipped with features like noise suppression filters and comfortable padding, significantly improved the reading experience.
The results are in! 94% of students said they felt very focused while using Epic with Zone Learn (vs. 18% students feeling very focused with their earbuds). One student said that Zone Learn, “helps me pay attention to the book.” In fact, with the Zone Learn headset, Brian’s class saw a 40% increase in the number of books completed on Epic.
