Discover the importance of bedtime reading and why you should make it a part of your kid’s routine.

Bedtime reading is a great way to foster a love for books in young kids. As you read aloud to your little one, their imagination soars! It can also be a bonding experience that brings you closer and a soothing ritual that helps them drift off to sleep. Read on to discover why bedtime reading matters for kids.

Fosters a Love for Reading

Contrary to what you might think, regularly reading to kids makes them more likely to want to read on their own. Exposing them to books and stories at an early age—at bedtime or anytime—can inspire a passion for reading within them. They’ll see reading as a source of joy and entertainment, and make positive associations that can last a lifetime.

Cultivates Imagination

Reading fiction helps fuel your child’s imagination by filling certain information gaps and building brain structures necessary for creativity. Information gaps are the missing details in a story that require the reader to use their imagination to fill in. For instance, a story might describe a mythical creature without providing every detail of its appearance, leaving room for the child to imagine its unique features.

Expands Vocabulary

Bedtime reading has another advantage: It expands your child’s vocabulary by introducing them to new words. As a child learns different words and phrases, they express themselves effectively. This fosters a sense of self-confidence and self-assurance in them. Also, rhymes and rhythms in stories help their understanding of language and enhance their reading and writing skills.

Builds Emotional Intelligence

Reading before bed helps little ones cope with their big emotions in a healthy way. Books can help them build their emotional vocabulary, giving them words to express how they feel. Seeing the world through characters in a book can also help make them more empathetic to others.

Strengthens Bonds

Bedtime reading enables kids to spend quality time and create a lasting bond with their parents. Cuddling up to read together is a chance at physical closeness. It  can also encourage meaningful conversations about the story and any thoughts and feelings you both may have in reaction to it.

Improves Reading Skills

When you read aloud to your child, they pick up on important factors such as tone, pronunciation and reading style. You can also give them a chance to practice by taking turns reading sections of a book. This can improve their reading skills and help you understand areas where they might need assistance.

Promotes Relaxation and Sleep

Bedtime stories can also help lull kids to sleep. While many parents start this practice when their children are babies, it’s useful for older kids, too. A good bedtime story allows the entire family to release any tension and unwind at the end of a long day.

So the next time you tuck your kid in, ask them to make some space and choose a fun bedtime story to read together.  Need a little inspiration? Check out our list of great read-alouds for kids of all ages!
