Why News Matters — page 5 — Sinclair was He was able to observe first hand the dangerous conditions and practices When his investigation was complete Sinclair wrote a book called The Jungle Parts of it were released in multiple issues of Appeal to Reason in 1905 Then it was published as a book in 1906 The Jungle was a fictionalized but graphic view of what Sinclair had seen in Packingtown He told readers about the bad working conditions and tainted meat products The Jungle became a best seller Readers were horrified and angry Sales of meat dropped People demanded that the federal government take action President Theodore Roosevelt put together a special commission to investigate Packingtown The commission was able to prove that what Sinclair had written was true Upton Sinclair's book led to significant changes in the meatpacking industry
