8 A Historic Home Run The 1960 Major League Baseball MLB World Series pitted the National League NL champion Pittsburgh Pirates against the American League AL champion New York Yankees The teams split the first six games in the best-of-seven best-of-seven series Game 7 went back and forth Two New York runs in the top of the ninth inning knotted the score at 9-9 Pittsburgh second baseman Bill Mazeroski led off the bottom of the ninth Maz had joined the team in 1956 when he was just 19. Since then he had become a three-time All-Star and two-time Golden Glove winner as the top defensive player at his position Now he was facing Yankees pitcher Ralph Terry Terry's first pitch was a ball Mazeroski turned on the second pitch and drove it over the left-field wall It was a home run Pirates win 10-9 Mazeroski sprinted to first base then ripped off his hat and waved it over his head as he circled the bases He came home to be mobbed by his jubilant teammates and team officials It is the only time that a World Series Game 7 has ended with a walk-off home run In 2001 ESPN named Mazeroski's blast the greatest home run of all time In 2010 the Pirates commissioned a statue of Mazeroski rounding the bases and waving his cap outside their home field of PNC Park
