CHAPTER 1 ROCKNE AND THE GIPPER Knute Rockne eventually became one of the most influential people in college football history But his arrival at the campus of the University of Notre Dame in South Bend Indiana in 1910 was much less heralded Though he never finished high school he had worked for several years to save money for college As a 22 year old freshman Rockne stood just 5 feet 8 inches tall and weighed 160 pounds However he became a valuable member of the Fighting Irish football team for four years Rockne was the team captain in 1913 He was also an All American that year Notre Dame went 24-1-3 during his four seasons Rockne and quarterback Charles Gus Dorais dazzled opponents Before they came along few college teams used the 4 After serving as Notre Dame's captain Knute Rockne became the team's legendary head coach
