Have I Ever Told You Black Lives Matter — page 1
Hello Like all parents I want nothing more than for my kids to believe in themselves Every single day I hope and pray that I am contributing to their ability to believe because that is my most important job I have written this book in the hope that knowing about Black history and achievements will help my kids Maybe it will help you too I’ve wondered for a long time why Black voices are mostly missing from young people’s literature especially outside the context of slavery and the civil rights movement This absence sends the false and disempowering message that Black history and Black achievements are not central to the American narrative Nothing could be further from the truth Think of any field of endeavor and you can be sure that Black innovators have made vital contributions The Black women and men introduced in this book are but a small handful of those innovators They were all kids once They all overcame obstacles because they all believed in themselves I hope you see yourself in these pages I hope this book contributes to the understanding that all people including native peoples people of all races people of all abilities people of all cultural and religious beliefs and LGBTQIA people are central to the American narrative and the human experience Be brave Be inspired Believe in yourself In solidarity Shani M King
