found a new way I did the best I could but one day the rain just stopped The drought started in 1931 and the crops started to fail Without grass or crops to keep the soil in place well it started blowing around Staying Put Local newspaper editor John McCarty encouraged people to stay by forming the Last Man Club Its pledge In the absence of an act of God serious family injury or some other emergency I pledge to stay here and help other last men remain in this country Although many farmers struggled to pay their bills and feed their families McCarty was determined to help the suffering farmers not lose hope By founding the Last Man Club he urged families to stay and try to outlast the terrible weather conditions Thanks to his efforts three-quarters of the farmers living in the Plains states stayed 8
