Great Battles of The Civil War — page 2 — Chapter One The First Shots Fired In 1861 the United States was in crisis Much of the North wanted to stop slavery from spreading Much of the South felt the North was taking away their right to make decisions Tensions were rising among the states Abraham Lincoln had been elected president in the fall of 1860 The South saw Lincoln as a threat to slavery Beginning in December 1860 southern states began to secede from the Union They formed a new country known as the Confederacy The Civil War was about to begin Fort Sumter sits in the harbor of Charleston off the coast of South Carolina In early 1861 the fort was not even finished when the first shots of the Civil War rang out The Union and the Confederacy both wanted to control the fortress As southern states left the Union they took control of the forts within their borders Only four Abraham Lincoln led the Union during the Civil War 5
