Vermont GEOGRAPHY Vermont is part of a six-state region called New England It is in the northeastern part of the United States It is a small state covering 9,616 square miles 24,905 sq km It ranks just 45th in size among the states Vermont is shaped like a long triangle pointed southward The state is about 157 miles 253 km long from north-to-south and 90 miles 145 km east-to-west at its widest point near the Canadian border It is just 42 miles 68 km wide at the Massachusetts border in the south The south-flowing Connecticut River forms a long border with the state of New Hampshire to the east To the south is Massachusetts To the west is the state of New York Vermont shares an international border with the country of Canada to the north Vermont is the only New England state that does not border the Atlantic Ocean The Connecticut River flows between farmland in Newbury Vermont and Haverhill New Hampshire 8 VERMONT
