TEXAS GEOGRAPHY Texas covers 268 596 square miles 695 660 sq km of territory second only to Alaska It is in the south central part of the United States It has many kinds of natural environments from the plains of the northern Panhandle to pine forests to the subtropical Lower Rio Grande Valley of the southeast Texas shares a border with New Mexico to the west The Rio Grande forms a river border with Mexico to the south To the north is the state of Oklahoma The Red River makes up much of the Oklahoma border To the east are Arkansas and Louisiana The Sabine River forms most of the border with Louisiana The large crescent shaped part of southeastern Texas borders the warm waters of the Gulf of Mexico The Rio Grande forms a river border between Texas and Mexico TEXAS
