NEW MEXICO GEOGRAPHY New new Mexico is in the Southwest region of the United States It is the fifth largest state covering 121 590 square miles 314 917 sq km Much of the land is arid desert but there are also forested mountains plains flat topped mesas canyons and river valleys New Mexico is nearly square shaped The state's longest and most important river is the Rio Grande It flows from north to south through the middle of the state Many of New Mexico's biggest cities are located along or near the river Other important rivers include the Pecos Canadian San Juan and Gila Rivers New Mexico's largest body of water is the Elephant Butte Reservoir in the south central part of the state The Rio Grande flows through the city of Albuquerque New Mexico NEW MEXICO
