ILLINOIS GEOGRAPHY Illinois Illinois is the 25th largest state of the United States It covers 57 914 square miles 149 997 sq km of land Much of the land l is flat or gently rolling hills Illinois shares borders with Iowa and Missouri to the west To the north lies Wisconsin Kentucky is to the south and to the east is Indiana Thousands of years ago glaciers covered most of Illinois except for a small part of the extreme southern tip The glaciers scoured the land and flattened it After they melted they left behind huge areas of grasslands The grasses grew and died for many centuries creating rich soil Today most of Illinois grassland prairies have been converted to farmland Illinois is called The Prairie State ILLINOIS
