DELAWARE GEOGRAPHY Delaware Delaware is the second smallest state behind Rhode Island Covering just 2 489 square miles 6 446 sq km it has only three counties New Castle in the north Kent in the middle and Sussex in the south From north to south the state is about 95 miles 153 km long At its narrowest in the north it is only 9 miles 14 km wide In the south Delaware is about 35 miles 56 km wide Delaware occupies the east side of the Delmarva Peninsula Bordering Delaware to the west and south is Maryland Pennsylvania is to the north The Delaware River Delaware Bay and the Atlantic Ocean form most of the state's eastern border Small parts of New Jersey also share Delaware's eastern border A tidal salt marsh attracts thousands of birds and animals at the Bombay Hook National Wildlife Refuge on the coast of Delaware Bay near Smyrna Delaware DELAWARE
