When it was originally presented in 1893 the Cup was just a silver bowl attached to a wooden pedestal Unlike many other trophies the Stanley Cup bears the names of nearly every player or team executive to win it In 1924 the Montreal Canadiens began the formal tradition of including a new ring with the players names every year The Cup became so large it came to be known as the Elephant Leg or the Stovepipe The Cup was redesigned in 1958 with five rings containing the names of 13 teams per ring scow UTAWA 903 To be eligible for inclusion a player needs to have played half his team's regular season games or at least one playoff game Another fun fact the members of the winning team are allowed to borrow the Cup for one day
