Foreword Dear Readers I am thrilled at the release of this new edition of the Breadwinner trilogy It brings back memories of all the women and children I met in the refugee camps in Pakistan their courage their pain and their hopes for a better future A decade has passed since the first book came out During this time new wars have started old ones have continued and refugee camps have emptied out only to fill up again somewhere else The Afghan people cannot be blamed for their situation Outsiders bear an enormous responsibility for all of this And ten years from now Thank you to all who have shared their stories with me Thank you to all who have opened one of my books and looked inside And thank you most of all to those who continue to survive against all odds and who remind us that we are capable of better decisions Deborah Ellis 2009
