Space Puzzles — page 2 — SPACE PUZZLES INTRODUCTION Welcome to NASA announces the sign as you enter the space exploration center You’ve been invited on a unique behind-the-scenes tour You’ll even get to put on a real space suit and sit on the control deck of the latest experimental spaceship This is a special kind of book It contains a story with lots of puzzles but these aren’t normal puzzles like you will have seen before These puzzles don’t tell you exactly what to do they provide only a certain amount of information and then it’s up to you to work out what to do and how to solve them If you get stuck or aren’t sure how to solve a puzzle there are hints provided The hints are an important part of each puzzle and you will need them for at least a few of the puzzles When reading the hints for a puzzle read them one at a time and only read the later hints if you are still stuck Working out what to do is part of the fun MILESTONES IN SPACE 1957 First animal in orbit 1959 First lunar probe 1961 First person in space 1966 First lunar soft landing 1969 First person on the moon PST EST GMT CET WORLD CLOCKS PST Pacific Standard Time 8 00 EST Eastern Standard Time 5 00 GMT Greenwich Mean Time 0 00 CET Central European Time 1 00 5

Space Puzzles — page 3 — PREPARING FOR LAUNCH Your tour has taken you to the cockpit of the latest developmental Planet X spaceship You can’t resist pressing a few buttons to see what it feels like to be an astronaut and you’re already wearing the latest NASA space suit Suddenly the floor starts shuddering and an alarm sounds A voice reaches you inside the space suit’s helmet Launch sequence started open bay doors for takeoff It looks like you’ve accidentally put the spaceship into launch mode Quick you must open the bay doors so the ship can exit the building without destroying the entire facility Rotate the dials to match the door-opening sequence on the panel below You need to open the bay doors The control dials look like this Next to the dials is a panel of options Only one of the options on the panel to the left is correct Can you work out which one Remember that you need to rotate the dials The arrows will rotate too 6 NEED A HINT Turn to page 26

Space Puzzles — page 4 — You open the doors but almost immediately a warning appears on the control panel DOCKING CLAMPS OVERRIDE REQUIRED You pick up the pilot’s manual and quickly find Docking clamps override in the index The manual tells you to release the clamps in the order 1 2 3 and features the following wiring diagram showing how the clamps are connected The wires from the docking clamps connect to the buttons by going in and out of some sockets Can you work out which button controls each clamp There are three docking clamps numbered 1 2 and 3 There are also three buttons marked A B and C A 1 B 2 C 3 After solving the wiring diagram puzzle you press the buttons in the correct order and unlock the docking clamps Now your ship can safely leave the launch tower without taking the tower along too LAUNCH NEED THE SOLUTION Turn to page 30 7
