When you think back on school, chances are there’s a teacher who stands out. Maybe they helped you master a particularly hard book, encouraged you to keep trying or introduced you to a subject you still love today.

From an early age, educators introduce kids to new ideas, foster critical thinking and problem-solving skills and help them work through challenges.

But, great teachers do so much more than teach lessons. They get to know their students and what helps them learn.

This World Teachers’ Day, we’re celebrating the educators who spend their days helping children learn to read, ask questions, follow their curiosity and discover new interests.

Kids spend a significant part of their day at school, giving teachers a front-row seat to thousands of small moments that shape how they see learning and themselves.

As students explore subjects like science, math and reading, teachers help create environments where they can try something difficult, get it wrong and try again. They can also help kids discover an interest in a new subject that extends far beyond the classroom.

Sometimes, educators are the people who uncover a passion a child will carry for years.

One of the joys of teaching is seeing a student become genuinely interested in a subject, whether it’s space, soccer, animals, Greek mythology or something completely unexpected.

Reading can take on a different meaning when kids find books that connect with those interests. Instead of reading because they’ve been asked to, they have an opportunity to use books to explore something they already want to know more about.

First-grade teacher Danica Yates sees that happen with Epic:

“My students engage with reading differently with Epic because there are books on there that they find interesting and engaging that I may not have in my classroom library or may not be available at the school library. It sparks a love for reading early on!”

Teachers can build on those moments by helping kids find more ways to explore the subjects that capture their attention.

Of course, every student brings different interests, abilities and reading habits into the classroom. Having more options can make it easier for teachers to connect students with books that work for them.

With a wide range of digital books available on Epic, educators can create and share collections, assign books that complement classroom lessons and give students more choices during independent reading time.

That choice can be especially helpful for kids who are still figuring out what they enjoy reading. Sometimes finding a book that clicks simply takes having more options to explore.

“My students get excited when they find books on Epic themselves that relate to what we are learning in class and want to read them, giving themselves some autonomy over their own learning,” says Danica.

Epic also offers tools to help educators support classroom reading. Features like student progress tracking, audiobooks and Read-to-Me titles give teachers different ways to understand and support students’ reading activity.

It’s difficult to capture everything teachers do in a single blog post.

Their impact can be seen in a student who gains confidence after working through something difficult, comes to class excited to learn more about a new subject or discovers a book they genuinely want to read.

This World Teachers’ Day, we want to thank the educators who make those moments possible every day. Thank you for helping kids build their confidence, explore their interests and discover how much there is to learn.
