Epic!: <\/strong>Growing up, did you have any unique challenges that caused you to miss out on things other kids were able to do? <\/p>\n\n\n\n

CS: <\/strong>When I was a kid, I was the shortest of all my friends. Not by a couple inches. But by a head or two. I was so short in third grade that when I stood next to my sister\u2019s kindergarten friends, I was shorter than most of them, too. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

This made me feel really different and self-conscious. I wasn\u2019t as fast a runner\u2014short legs. I wasn\u2019t as high a jumper. People would say, \u201cOh, you must be good at hide & seek, because you can fit in small spaces.\u201d But that didn\u2019t make me feel any better.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n

These days I\u2019m still shorter than all my friends. I\u2019m only five feet tall, which is pretty short for a grownup. But I don\u2019t mind so much anymore. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Epic!: <\/strong>You dedicated “My Pet Slime” to your grandmothers. What made you decide to dedicate the book to them? <\/p>\n\n\n\n

CS:<\/strong> I had two wonderful grandmothers\u2014my Grandma Doris on my dad\u2019s side and my Grandma Diane on my mom\u2019s side. Piper is very close to her Grandma Sadie. When I was writing about it, it made me think of all the good memories I have of my grandmothers, and so I dedicated the book to them.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n

CS:<\/strong> I think the theme of friendship\u2014in all its unexpected forms\u2014is really the heart of this series.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Epic!: <\/strong>Should kids look up to Piper? What traits does she have that would benefit kids to emulate?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

CS:<\/strong> I admire Piper\u2019s creativity\u2014she wants to be an artist when she grows up, and her favorite material to work with is slime! I also love her capacity for forgiveness. I don\u2019t want to give too much away, but Piper has a bit of a problem with another girl in school, Claire, and in the end I think Piper handles their conflict rather well.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Epic!: <\/strong>Where did you come up with Piper\u2019s pet slime recipe?<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n

CS: <\/strong>My inspiration for all things slime is my friend Logan\u2019s ten-year-old daughter!<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Piper: <\/strong>Sure!<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Epic!: <\/strong>You\u2019ve said you want to be a great artist like Frida Kahlo and Leonardo DaVinci when you grow up. What made you decide you want to be an artist? <\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n

Piper:<\/strong> Hmm \u2026 that\u2019s a really hard question to answer. It\u2019s like someone asking \u201cWhat made you decide that purple is your favorite color?\u201d It\u2019s not anything in particular that made me decide about purple. It\u2019s just the color that makes me happiest to look at. And doing art makes me really happy, too. That\u2019s why I want to be an artist.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Epic!: <\/strong>What do you admire most about Grandma Sadie?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Piper: <\/strong>Grandma Sadie is the bravest person I know! She explores space. That\u2019s her job. It\u2019s not easy at all. Space is big and unknown and sometimes very scary. But that hasn\u2019t stopped Grandma Sadie!<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Epic!: <\/strong>How has your pet Cosmo made a difference in your life?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

P<\/strong>iper: <\/strong>Cosmo taught me that when you have something in your life that you really don\u2019t like (like my allergies) it can lead to something very special (like a pet made out of slime).<\/p>\n\n\n\n
