Mr Hollister pulled to the side of the road stopped the car and they all got out Pieces of pumpkin were stuck on the front bumper and the front right wheel was smeared with pumpkin seeds The fender too had been hit but there was only a small dent on it which could hardly be seen Carefully watching the Sunday-afternoon traffic Pete and Pam hastened into the road and removed the pieces of slippery pumpkin What made the pumpkins run away asked Sue tugging at her mother’s hand Mrs Hollister a pretty slender woman smiled at her daughter and said Maybe they didn’t want to be made into jack-o lanterns Perhaps Daddy knows why Mr Hollister was a tall athletic-looking man with a pleasant smile He had already taken a cloth from inside the car and had wiped everything clean The lane the pumpkins rolled out of is on Mr Johnson’s farm he said Come on let’s see what’s the matter The mother and father and five youngsters walked back toward the lane They were a happy family and often shared mystery and adventure together Sometimes their travels took them to distant places but now and then they met with mysteries right in their home town Shoreham was located on beautiful Pine Lake and the Hollisters big comfortable house was situated on the shore of the lake a mile or so from Mr Johnson’s farm They had come there to buy pumpkins to be used in making 8
