4 America in the 1850s America in the 1850s In 1850 the population of the United States was a little more than 23 million people Almost 4 million were slaves of African American ancestry living mostly in the southern states West of the Mississippi River were vast territories that had not yet been organized as states They included a territory that today makes up the states of Oklahoma Nebraska Wyoming Montana and Kansas Another huge area consisted of territory won from Mexico during the Mexican War 1846-1848 and was not yet part of the United States It included the current states of Arizona New Mexico Nevada Colorado and Utah The huge state of Texas had been admitted to the United States in 1845 California also won from Mexico in the Mexican War became a state in 1850 Oregon Territory Minnesota Territory New Hampshire Vermont Maine Utah Territory California New Mexico Territory Mexico Wisconsin Michigan New York Unorganized Territory Iowa Indiana Ohio Illinois Neutral Missouri Arkansas Kentucky Tennessee Mississippi Alabama Georgia Texas Louisiana Pennsylvania D C Virginia North Carolina South Carolina Florida Massachusetts Rhode Island Connecticut New Jersey Delaware Maryland States Territories Other countries Disputed areas Mexico ceded California to the United States by the Treaty of Guadalupe-Hidalgo in 1848 California became the 31st state on September 9 1850
